Personally I would love it if they opened up the source code, but I am thinking it wouldn't be to their advantage to do so. They are doings some very unqiue things with Harmony that should probably remain closed.
Also, I think they have been working on this for a long time, and I really hope it pays off for them.

That'd be pretty much the same as releasing Basecamp under an open source license. It's just not in their best interest as a company. John's been happy to share snippets, but the source as a whole, I'm sure, will remain closed.

We love open source. Harmony itself runs on several pieces of open
source software. And we've already released parts of Harmony's tech
into the community. But as a whole, Harmony's code will be closed for
the forseeable future.
Believe us, we'll continue to contribute back to the community. We
couldn't have built Harmony without open source.

Ok, I was imagining something like http://expressionengine.com offering a core version open source or wordpress offering a Freemium hosted service.

Correct. We have no intions of open sourcing ever. That said we are
big believers and have already released several pieces of harmony (and
will continue to do so).

Ok, thanks. I mostly just don't want a hosted solution.
